The original RIPEMD algorithm was designed to generate a 128-bit hash, but it was later expanded to produce a 160-bit hash in RIPEMD-160 to increase the number of bits in the hash and make it more resistant to collision attacks. The RIPEMD-160 hash's 160-bit size provides a high level of security, making it extremely difficult to find two different messages that produce the same hash. The hash output is always 20 bytes (160 bits) in size, regardless of the size of the input message.
