Why convert rows to columns?

Transposing tabular data helps you quickly reorient CSVs, log exports, or survey responses without opening a spreadsheet app. It is useful when you need to flip a header row into a header column for reporting, normalize inconsistent data dumps, or prepare files for BI and SQL imports.

  • Clean mixed-length rows by padding missing cells with a custom value.
  • Strip commented lines before transposing to keep only actionable data.
  • Export results as CSV or copy them into spreadsheets, SQL scripts, or notebooks.

How to use the Rows to Columns Converter

  • Paste Your Text: Enter or paste your data into the large Input box at the top.
  • Choose How to Handle Incomplete Data: Use the Fix Incomplete Data dropdown to decide whether to fill missing values, drop them, or apply another correction method.
  • Set Comment Handling (Optional): If your input contains commented lines, specify the Comment Symbol so the tool can ignore those lines during conversion.
  • Enable or Disable Auto Update: Keep Auto Update checked to convert automatically as you type, or uncheck it if you prefer manual control.
  • Click Convert: Press the Convert button to process the input based on your selected options.
  • View the Output: The converted result will appear in the Output box at the bottom, ready for copying or download.

Tips for clean transposed files

  • Normalize delimiters first; stick to commas for CSV or tabs for TSV before transposing.
  • Remove leading/trailing spaces in source data to avoid creating duplicate column names.
  • When sharing output with BI tools, replace blanks with a consistent placeholder so downstream joins do not fail.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does the tool support quoted CSV fields?

Yes. Quoted fields and escaped quotes are preserved when parsing, so addresses or text with commas stay intact after transposing.

Can I ignore blank lines or commented rows?

Enter a comment prefix (for example // or #) to skip those lines before conversion. Empty lines are automatically removed.

How are shorter rows handled?

Select "Fill with Empty Values" to keep blanks, or choose "Fill with Custom Values" and provide a token like NA to pad missing cells so every column lines up.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. The transpose happens in your browser, so your CSV or text data stays on your device.
